Over the past several months, Seaspire and our academic collaborator at UC San Diego have been featured in high-profile publications, including National Geographic and Chemical & Engineering News, highlighting a breakthrough bio-manufacturing process for xanthommatin, the pigment underlying our Xanthochrome platform. These independent validations underscore both the scientific significance and the scalability potential of the production process.

Most notably, the new manufacturing approach dramatically reduces production costs. In the National Geographic feature, the lab describes producing xanthommatin so inexpensively that it is now being used in educational and artistic applications—an anecdote that powerfully illustrates how far costs have fallen compared to traditional extraction or synthetic routes. This shift has major implications for Seaspire: lower COGS directly enable more market-favorable price points, faster adoption by brand partners, and stronger alignment with large-scale commercial use cases.

This level of technical and cost inflection reinforces our belief that accelerating investment in this alternative manufacturing pathway is both timely and strategically critical.Given the current visibility, validation, and commercial implications, we believe this approach may now be especially compelling to support rapid scale-up and capitalize on growing market interest.

Problem statement

The beauty and personal care industry is facing a critical gap: consumers and global brands increasingly demand high-performance ingredients that are both safe and genuinely sustainable, yet the market is still dominated by legacy synthetic ingredients with damaging environmental impact. Brands are under pressure to meet stricter regulations, ESG goals, and consumer transparency expectations - but lack access to next-generation, science-validated alternatives that can deliver real efficacy without ecological trade-offs.

Seaspire addresses this gap by supplying the rapidly growing market for bio-based, environmentally resilient skincare actives that are proven safe for people and the planet. Our proprietary marine-inspired technology, Xanthochrome®, responds to rising concerns about pollution exposure, oxidative stress, and skin barrier damage.
